Parenting with Confidence: Skills for Parents with Mental Health Challenges

Supporting parents facing mental health challenges to enhance parenting skills and strengthen family bonds, ultimately improving overall well-being and quality of life.

What is Parenting With Confidence?

This program was developed by a mental health occupational therapist as a doctoral capstone project. It is a peer-reviewed, evidence-driven program. The objective of the PWC program is to build parents skills and support through learning and using positive parenting skills, identifying, and using individual coping strategies to manage the symptoms of their illness as they relate to parenting.

Goal 1

Parents will report increased parenting skills, confidence, and satisfaction in their parenting-related occupations and activities.

Goal 2

Parents will report increased engagement in meaningful family occupations and activities.

Goal 3

Parents will demonstrate decreased stress related to parenting occupations and activities.

Program Description

The program goals are completed through six modules. The content is designed to be flexible and easily adjusted to meet the unique needs of parents and their families. Ideally, parents should complete one 90-minute session per week. This allows time for learning skills and concepts and then taking time to apply what they have learned through the weekly homework activities. The lesson modules are designed to be interactive and include videos, activities, quizzes, worksheets, and a weekly “homework” activity to be completed both alone and with the family.

The program download includes a Facilitator Manual with all 6 lessons, worksheets, and activities and a Parent Workbook that is given to each participant. This workbook includes information and homework for each session.
